Things to Look for When Searching for a Dentist

The key to a good patient/dentist relationship is finding a dentist that you can trust with your oral health. Having a dentist you trust will allow you to feel more comfortable during your regular visits and give you a safe, trusted place to turn to for a procedure or dental emergency. Here’s what to consider when searching for a dentist:

The Basics

As you search for the right dentist to fit your needs, start with the basics:

  • Is the office easy to get to from your home or job?
  • Do they have office hours that fit your schedule?
  • Do they accept insurance or offer multiple payment options?
  • Are they a member of the ADA (American Dental Association)?

If you decide to visit the dentist’s office, make sure their office is clean and orderly. Does their equipment seem to be up-to-date and clean? When asking questions to the staff, take note of if they answer your questions in a kind and courteous manner.

Where to Look

You may not know where to look when it comes to finding the perfect dentist for you. A great place to start is the ADA’s Find-A-Dentist tool, where you can search by name, location, or specialty. Ask a trusted friend or relative about who they trust for their dental care. Once you have found some good candidates, visit their websites or consider calling or visiting the office.

Consultation

You may be able to schedule a consultation before making an appointment as you search for the right dentist. Make a list of any questions you have and bring your records along if there is something more specific you would like to ask. Be sure to share dental concerns, including any anxiety. Make sure the dentist answers every question and understands your concerns.

Evaluate

After your consultation, evaluate how you feel leaving the dentist’s office. Do you feel as if your concerns were understood? Would you feel comfortable expressing your fear or anxiety to your dentist? One of the most important things to consider when choosing a dentist is whether or not you feel comfortable.
